Something Beautiful is on the Horizon
Sleep evaded us most nights at boy racer central but over the past two weeks we had begun to acclimatise to the thundering baselines that made the bedroom walls vibrate, in fact during the day we often caught ourselves humming the tune to Post Malone or some other the rap song we heard throughout the night. In all honesty some of the music choices that we heard were not too bad and have even made it on to my iPod playlist (not Martins of course, his music choices hark back to a bygone era). Despite a busy day spent in Halifax, the four hours of travel, nearly losing all our…

Beware of a calm surface – You never know what lies beneath
Our last week at Hobbiton… sorry I mean our Airbnb (for Hobbits), was passing sedately and mercifully quickly no doubt aided by the fact that we had packed in as many excursions as physically possible to avoid spending any time confined to our broom cupboard sized accommodation. With plenty of exercise, vitamin D and vitamin sea we were feeling surprisingly good. The highlights of the week were without question our trips to Summerville Beach and to the Kejimkujik National Seaside Park. I am not sure why we were so surprised by how pristine, untouched, and achingly beautiful the beaches in NS would be, and it did not stop there because…

Its Liverpool Jim but not as we know it!
If there is one thing our adventure has taught us so far it is that any journey involves adversity and that you must take the rough with the smooth, well for us the next couple of weeks were about to get as rough as a badger’s bottom. There was little time to revel in the jubilation of having our offer on ‘The’ house accepted, we had a week to have a home, septic tank and well inspection completed, and the results submitted before the offer went unconditional and settlement had to be made, and our time at the Lilly Pad had also ended. With appointments made for the various inspections…

You Had Me at Hello
As ridiculous as it sounds, we knew we wanted to buy this house as soon as we walked in to the first room! We had entered the main living area of the house from the patio door off the back deck and were lost for words as soon as we stepped inside. We were awe struck by the kaleidoscope of light and colour that filled the room, the large windows framed the forested backdrop like a painting and the cerulean sky dazzled us from the skylights above. The sheer amount of floor space made the room feel cavernous, even with an open plan setting with kitchen, diner, and lounge there…

Finding the One
Viewing the property in Bear River came with much anticipation, having previously been hoodwinked by real estate photographers we were keeping an open mind about what we would find when we arrived, that being said we still had a good feeling about this one! Much to our surprise and delight this property was not only the same in real life as it was in the photos, but the description was accurate too. It ticked off almost all of the extensively long criteria on list – Rural location – CHECK Close to a shop; the nearest convenience store was a 15-minute drive – CHECK Close to a town; the closest town…

Bitten by the Bug
Hot off the heels of the house of horrors our days were a flurry of activity from property viewings, to exploring the local area and evenings spent sharing dinner and Moonshine with our besties next door. We were fast learning that we had a great deal in common with the Rocks, in fact we strongly suspected them to be our Canadian doppelgängers as far as character, mannerisms and sensibilities are concerned (I am not sure if Jason & Tanya will take that as a compliment or an insult!). Each day we checked our phones eagerly awaiting a text message from the Rocks asking us what we were up to and…

A Picture Paints a Thousand Lies
We were really starting to fall in love with Annapolis Royal and the surrounding area, I mean how could we not! It was picture postcard pretty, steeped in history, close enough to the water to satisfy our inner mermaid/man, it had a Moonshine distillery and of course our new besties lived there so it will come as no surprise that the first property we were to view was only a short 10-minute drive down the road from the Lilly Pad. Ever the optimists we were confident that this property ticked many of the boxes on our lengthy list, the photos painted a picture of a quaint and well-loved home that…

Friendships Forged Over Storms & Moonshine
Waking up every morning to the view of the Annapolis basin and the town beyond brought a peace with it that seeped through to the very marrow of our travel weary bones, life at the Lilly Pad had quickly fallen into a sedate rhythm of dog walking, waving across the fence to our next-door neighbours who had three lovely puppers and house hunting which was now priority number one. House hunting was proving to be far more difficult than we had anticipated, naturally Covid had impacted the property market here with prices doubling over the past 18 months and whilst there were far more houses available on the market in…

Reunited & it Feels so Good
For the first time since we landed in Canada we slept soundly and deeply, snuggled in a warm comfortable bed surrounded by complete darkness and utter silence, with no light pollution or sirens to disturb our slumber. These were the nights we had grown accustomed to living in the wop wops of NZ and it was not until now that we realised how much we had missed it and how much we now craved it. We awoke the next morning refreshed and surprisingly lighter as if a weight had been lifted, staying in the Lilly Pad was going to be just what we needed, some peace and a chance to…

Happiness is a Cottage by the Sea
Despite the late-night shenanigans from the young hooligans sharing our floor we managed to get a decent night’s sleep and woke up the following morning ready and eager to go and pickup our fur babies from the airport. However, a quick scan of our emails put paid to our plans and snuffed out our excitement. We had received an email from Jet Pets informing us that they had prepared our pets for their flight the previous evening even going as far as to take them to the airport ready for loading onto the plane only for the airline to bump them off the flight due to a lack of space.…
